Classic family beach resort
Fronting a wide northern stretch of Ao Wong Duean, Samed Cabana offers 60 rooms set in tan cabanas along the beach and in two-floor stacks, including one set beside a swimming pool.
As a midrange choice, it’s a tossup between here and Vongdeuan Resort.
The least expensive superior rooms are in a two-storey concrete block at the resort’s rear. We’d probably spend the extra 600 baht for a poolside superior with direct access to the medium-size pool, but no sea views -- if going this route, ask for an upper floor room. Facing the beach, the wood and concrete villa-style rooms are set up in rows with large furnished terraces. You can pay extra for a room built directly over the sand, though we’d almost prefer the added privacy of a second- or third-row room. Two rooms come in each of these tan buildings with thatch plopped on top of the solid roofs; we guess that makes them cabanas? A range of family rooms is also available. All rooms come with air-con, LCD TVs, WiFi, fridges, safes, rattan decor, firm beds on wood platforms, hardwood furnishings and basin sinks in bright bathrooms. The cabana-style rooms also bag you daybeds and large windows.
Lined with white plastic loungers, Cabana’s stretch of beachfront is the best and biggest of any resort on the bay. The restaurant gets solid reports for both the Thai and Western food. A somewhat disorganised staff also offer Thai massage, kayak rental and tour bookings. There is an on-site ATM and convenience store.
With polished concrete stacks set around a swimming pool on a more crowded section of Ao Wong Duean, the newer Lalune Beach Resort is a sister to Cabana. It’s newer and with a more contemporary design.
