Located midway between Nadan Pier and the good part of Ao Noi Na beach, Baan Pra Kai Kaew serves up well-equipped air-con rooms in detached concrete bungalows or in a concrete guesthouse set on stilts over the sea.

It’s a comfy choice if you’re searching in the 900 to 1,900 baht range -- especially if you like German food and beer.

A German/Thai couple runs the small resort (or large guesthouse), which has a definite German efficiency going on. Sand is neatly raked between tables in the beer garden, rooms are immaculately kept and a helpful “Don’t jump over the wall” sign keeps guests from diving off a platform at the end of the main building that’s occupied by air-con machinery. Thick yellow and orange concrete walls come with very little decor, as the place aims for function over form.

That concept extends into the rooms, all with firm beds, cheapish blankets, fridge, air-con, basic hot-water bathrooms, TVs and free WiFi. On the inland side of the road, eight bungalows bag you small porches and have a bit more space than other rooms. Set directly over the waves at high tide, the main building has six rooms priced according to proximity to sea views (or lack of them). The cheapest have no windows; we’d shell out an extra 100 baht for one of the two rooms with a couple of tinted windows affording partial sea views. The priciest two rooms are located at the far end of the building and come with private balconies placed over the sea. Guests staying longer than a week get a 200-baht discount on any room.

A tiny private beach is outfitted with cushioned loungers, while the breezy restaurant serves decent German and Thai food. The owners have a reputation for being impersonal and sometimes rude; we’ve never had a problem with them, but those seeking a chatty staff might be disappointed. German speakers will probably get more attention, especially after having a few beers.

Rates are fixed throughout the year -- ask and you’ll probably receive a discount in low season. Baan Pra Kai Kaew is not on the booking sites, so just walk in or contact directly to reserve.
