Set on the inland side of the main road as you enter Haad Sai Khao village from the north, Arunee has a tatty wooden longhouse building with cheap fan rooms.

Rooms are small and simple, with only a mattress, mosquito net, fan, hot water bathroom, window and small front porch, often with a portrait of the Thai king above the doorway. The guy who showed us around was very friendly, and he offers an internet cafe to go with tour and transport bookings. This is an acceptable choice for budget travellers who would rather be on the main drag than the more distant northern stretch of beach. It also would do the trick if you arrive late and don’t feel like trudging up that beach with your pack until the next morning. When the sand beckons, it’s an easy three-minute stroll away.
