Huge upscale resort
Impossible to miss as you first enter Haad Sai Khao by road, the enormous KC Grande should fit the bill if you’re after an all-out luxury beach resort experience—and have the means to pay for it.
KC Grande is the largest and one of the longest-running resorts on the island, with hundreds of rooms set in freestanding villas and room blocks sprawling over a huge chunk of terrain on both sides of the main road. You’ll find four swimming pools, three bars, two restaurants, a coffee shop, convention centre, convenience store and massage. The well-equipped fitness centre stands with an outlook over the main pool, beach and sea.
Classified by the resort as “hillside”, about a third of the property stretches over the inland side of the road in a section that feels like a separate resort. The rooms here are not bad options for saving a little cash. A big pool with slide will please families, while couples could go for a smart ground-floor room opening to a long and slender pool. If opting for the hillside area, request a room away from the road, as some are set very close to the traffic.
New development in the inland section joined a complete rebuild of the freestanding beachfront rooms since our previous visit. Replacing the old wooden bungalows are slick villas that resemble space-age fortresses—not in a bad way—with their thick concrete walls and unusual angles along the pointed roofs. These represent prime honeymooning material for those who can manage the price tags above 10,000 baht. You can save considerable cash by opting for a “garden view” villa set just beyond the larger beachfront editions.
Also in the resort’s “seaside” section, deluxe rooms set in a three-floor block all come with loads of space and floor-to-ceiling glass doors with sea and pool outlooks from furnished terraces; go for a higher floor for the best vistas. Though we were only able to check out a couple of rooms at the resort, it appeared that all rooms throughout the property come with private terraces and even the smallest in the hillside section bag you a Jacuzzi tub.
Rooms come with a tasteful and soothing, if not notably memorable, design relying on hardwood or tile floors and art featuring patterns found in nature. Standard amenities include bathrobes, safe, TV, desk, daybed and WiFi, with rain shower heads joining the tubs in spacious bathrooms. Top-end suites bag you living rooms, dining areas and kitchenettes, and the best beachfront villas feature loungers on semi-private patches of lawn beside the sand. This is however a busy stretch of Haad Sai Khao, so don’t expect privacy outside.
While buildings are crammed in tight in the hillside section, the seaside area was designed with more space and greenery reaching around a large infinity pool with swim-up bar and plenty of cushioned loungers on the sea-view decks. The included breakfast buffet is served in a seaside restaurant that resembles a modern theatre with its towering A-shaped roof.
KC Grande vies with White Sand Beach Resort for the longest beachfront of any resort in Haad Sai Khao, if not the whole island. While there is direct access to the main drag, most of the property stretches below the wooded hillside that continues north and cuts off places like Independent Bo from the road, resulting in peace and quiet. You could easily spend an entire holiday without leaving the resort, but plenty of good dining and nightlife options are found nearby.
It takes an army of staffers to run a resort of this size and the service can be hit or miss—receptionists were a tad flustered during our visit. But overall, if you don’t mind the large scale, KC Grande is a big cut above all other resorts in Haad Sai Khao. We think it also beats similarly priced resorts down in Khlong Prao, such as Santhiya Tree and The Dewa. Do shop around online for deals.
