Saffron on the Sea

Saffron on the Sea

Artistic rooms and food

More on Ko Chang

Saffron on the Sea is a fitting name for this smoothly run boutique resort and restaurant offering artistic rooms in a quiet spot by a pebble-strewn coast.

Travelfish says:

A Thai chef from Bangkok and his foodie friends run the business, which is best known for the restaurant serving Thai food prepared with patience, care and style. A similarly creative breeze blows into the seven rooms, each individually designed and set back beyond the seaside dining deck. They all come with sunset-facing terraces made of laterite stone or wood.

Accessed through glass doors, the rooms feature terracotta and dark stone tiles, high rattan ceilings and very large mosaic-tiled bathrooms with elephant showerheads. In the freestanding bungalows set closest to the sea, interior murals depict layered mountains to create a sense of depth. We also liked the less expensive rooms set further back in circular two-floor structures with brushed concrete walls on the lower floors and hardwood up top.

Receiving a fresh coat of white paint along with other upgrades since our last visit, any room gets you a TV, fridge, hot water, WiFi and soft bed with quality linens. They represent excellent value and remind us of the much pricier rooms found at Aana Resort down in Khlong Prao. While Saffron is one of our top picks for couples, families will be better off at nearby Paradise Palms.

Saffron’s restaurant is a dining destination of note on Ko Chang, and guests should expect staffers to become preoccupied around dinnertime. They whip up individually ordered breakfasts for guests, and we’ve found the owner and a couple of staffers to be patient and approachable.

Though you’ll need to stroll a few steps north to find a tiny patch of sand to sit on, Saffron fronts a rocky coastline with fairy lights hung above the deck and a lawn reaching right up to the surf. If you’re willing to trade the sea view for a swimming pool, the nearby Keereeta Resort is also worth considering.
