Something for everyone
Rock Sand’s assertive stone-and-concrete frontage sits above the high-tide surf towards the northern end of Haad Sai Khao, with a restaurant built above boulders, good-value air-con rooms found further back along the hillside and a sensational beach stretching northwards.
Rooms come in a few connected buildings that make the most of what space they have, especially when compared to the spread-out White Sand Beach Resort nearby. Representing solid value, tile-floored air-con editions are clean and equipped with fridges, safes, desks, shelves, WiFi, firm beds and showers set behind curtains in the hot-water bathrooms. Most rooms open to a view of the sea from a shared terrace, with stairs accessing the upper few floors.
You’ll also find good-value fan rooms with either concrete walls and tile floors or woven bamboo walls and hardwood floors. The cheapest of these rely on shared hot-water bathrooms, while the priciest are identical to standard air-con rooms in terms of amenities, space and design. Several affordable family options are also available in both the fan and air-con categories.
Almost the entire property was built atop a wide, low-lying patch of stone with sand on either side (hence the name). This placement allowed designers to build much closer to the surf than all other resorts on Haad Sai Khao, and they took advantage by way of a restaurant that serves quality food and drinks along with a sunset vista topped only by Maylamean next door.
Some will however feel that this construction went too far and clashes with the scenery. It also results in passersby having no choice but to walk through the restaurant when walking up and down the beach at high tide. We do like the vibe at Rock Sand, which successfully caters to everyone from young backpackers to middle-age flashpackers and families.
