The personable Dutch owner of Garden Resort offers high-quality concrete bungalows in a peaceful spot on the inland side of the road through Kai Bae village, and it’s a fantastic value for families and couples that don’t mind a five-minute walk to the beach.

Accessed by stone footpaths and stretching back for quite some distance on this long and slender property, the beige rooms come in freestanding bungalows and slightly larger buildings, each with two connecting rooms. Don’t be surprised if a cuddly cat pays you a visit on your private terrace kitted out with tables and chairs.

Inside the tiled rooms you get high-quality mattress on chunky bamboo frames along with safe, kettle, fridge, WiFi and widescreen TV with many satellite channels and access to loads of online movie services. The owner does a great job of explaining how all of this worked at check in.

Unusually crafted bathrooms come with stonewalls, red-glass sinks and hot-water shower. The only thing missing is a desk, but only cranky travel writers complain about that.

At the centre of the leafy property stretches a very well maintained saltwater swimming pool that’s reputed to be one of the deepest on Chang at one end (the other end is suitable for kids). The resort also features a good buffet breakfast, all-day Thai food at the attached cafe and a great common area sporting a full bar, billiards table and usually DVDs of Pink Floyd or the Stones on TV.

The beach is reached via an easy stroll across the road and several outstanding Kai Bae eateries are at your fingertips, including Papa Bakery and Barrio Bonito. Several good bars, such as Jonas Jonasson and Filo, are also a quick jump from Garden, but the rooms stay quiet thanks to the tucked-away location.

If you don’t mind shelling out a bit more cash for a midrange resort on the beach, KB Resort should do the trick. As for similar inland properties, The Stage Koh Chang has stylish and comfy rooms in a long attached building for similar rates as Garden. Those seeking a cheaper option with no pool will find clean rooms at nearby Paradise Bungalows and Sanook Sanang Resort.
