Charming on the pier
The charming Paradise Homestay has budget rooms set on stilts above the bay to remind guests of Bang Bao’s roots as a fishing village.
Owned by a welcoming family of Bang Bao natives, the old house is found about halfway up the pier and accessed by a narrow walkway with no railings. An open floor plan includes a central common area and a roofed deck where you can tuck into a green curry or smoothie with feet dangling above the water.
Though small and simple, the clean rooms possess an old-style charm and come with firm beds, wood-panel walls and louvered shutters that can be propped open to let in the sea breeze. They also have wall-mounted fans or air-con, with some relying on shared hot-water bathrooms and others with private bathrooms.
The comfiest rooms found closest to the restaurant have an unexpected modern design with some brushed concrete to go with the dark woods. In some fan rooms, parts of the floor beneath beds was left open apart from rods to keep little kids from falling through—this results in good airflow but also combines with thin walls to ensure that guests will hear every boat. Of course, this also means the splashing sea might be romantic as you fall asleep.
Helping to make up for the cramped rooms are large daybeds, sofas and a TV in the central common space. WiFi is free and the owners check in on guests often to make sure they’re comfortable. There’s also a non-roofed deck where you can take in the sunset or paddle off in one of the free kayaks.
