Catering to health-conscious travellers, The Spa Koh Chang Resort offers cushy rooms along with a detox centre, daily yoga and meditation classes, a restaurant focusing on raw foods, and a raft of activities that encourage guests to make the most of the beautiful Salak Khok and Salak Phet area.
Filled with flowering bushes and trees, the resort tumbles down to a tranquil river rimmed by mangroves—a great place to begin a paddle to the rest of Salak Khok Bay. Overlooking the river you’ll find wooden walkways and lounge chairs in salas dotted here and there. On the southern bank stretches a circular swimming pool and more decks, with the restaurant occupying an open-sided upper pavilion. No shortage of places to relax here.
The good-value midrange accommodation starts at the rear of the property in an attached wood-and-concrete building next to the driveway. While these rooms don’t hold a candle to the pricier villas, they’re clean, comfy and dubbed “oriental” rooms, with the decoration to match. Amenities include dated fridges, TVs, desks, WiFi, safes and tiled hot-water bathrooms.
All other rooms come in villas built along the lush hillside overlooking the river; some are freestanding while others come two to a building with wood walls up top and concrete below. There’s some real elegance in the thick mosquito nets draped over four-poster wooden bedframes and big tubs with rain showerheads built into amber-walled bathrooms. You also get several windows, LCD TVs and tables on large terracotta terraces.
Most people who stay here take part in one or more of the treatments and activities offered by the resort. Spa and cleansing options include abdominal detox massage, an herbal steam room, infrared sauna and fasting programmes incorporating herbal supplements. We did a seven-day fast here in 2013 and found it a touch more impersonal than somewhere like The Sanctuary on Ko Pha Ngan, but perfectly adequate.
Yogis come from around the island to take part in The Spa’s daily yoga and meditation classes held on a serene riverside deck. On top of all of that, the mostly helpful staffers offer Thai and raw food cookery classes; guided kayaking excursions; trekking to the summit of Khao Laem; and daily group trips to check out different parts of the island by pick-up truck. All of this really helps to make up for the isolated location.
While there’s no place quite like The Spa Koh Chang, Blue Lagoon over in Khlong Prao is a cheaper resort also offering a long list of activities and soothing atmosphere.
