Cheap digs in the village
Around 15 shabby guesthouses and hostels, many set above restaurants and bars, offer dirt-cheap private rooms within clear earshot of the nightlife in Lonely Beach village. If we were still in our twenties, on a bender and feeling the need to stay in this area, Marco Guest House would be our choice.
Set in a shack-like wooden house on the same lane as Stone Free and within earshot of the village’s main nightlife lane, Marco was named after the affable Italian owner who cooks up delicious pizza that you can enjoy at a long communal table on the ground floor. Climb upstairs to find a relaxing open-sided common room with hammocks, floor cushions and, during our visit, Marco’s lazy white dog was sprawled out on the floor.
With a few found on either floor, rooms are small and basic but the ones we peeked into looked beyond acceptable, considering how they fetch less cash than a lot of the bunks in Lonely Beach’s hostels. Single rooms are tiny and doubles have a little more space, but they all come with thin wood walls, firm mattresses, fans and windows. All guests use a couple of shared bathrooms with hot-water showers and minimal space.
Though popular with Italians in particular, the guesthouse attracts all sorts of backpackers and is a good choice if you’re travelling solo on a tight budget. Meeting other guests is easy at an intimate place like this, and free WiFi is available. The location places you in the heart of Lonely Beach village, about a 10-minute walk south of the beach itself. Bring earplugs if not staying up late.
Similar options include Thale Guesthouse and Cafe del Sunshine, both offering basic fan rooms with shared bathrooms above restaurants set right on the nightlife lane. Stone Free also has a few cheap rooms above its live music bar, or you could opt for a cheap hut at Laem Yai Bungalows. Otherwise you’ll find quieter nights at Beach Jungle on the other side of the main drag.
