Elegance by the sand
Spanning much of Khlong Kloi’s southern half of sand, Chivapuri is an elegant midranger attracting families, couples and anyone who happens to be after a plush room in a very serene setting.
Most accommodation comes in two-floor concrete villas set beneath trees just back from the beach, with one room on each floor and traditional Thai-style pointed roofs up top. Unless you’ll need to practice your tap-dancing routine, the upper-floor rooms are worth the extra cash thanks to much higher ceilings and more privacy on the porches.
Priced on size and proximity to the beach, five room types start with “superiors” which, unlike all other rooms, lack plus-size bathtubs in the large and immaculate bathrooms. They do however sport rain showerheads as part of 40 square metres of space to go with the same soft lanterns and accents of silk, ceramics and rattan that you’ll find in pricier rooms.
Families can go for a two-bedroom villa with a pair of king beds and an array of seating options on huge private terraces. For 500 baht each, extra beds may be added to any room and, with all but the cheapest rooms bagging you 60 square metres of space, there’s plenty of room for little ones to play. Chivapuri also has a real romantic quality, making it great for couples as well.
Featuring smooth-wood furnishings and either terracotta or hardwood floors, the interiors made us want to settle in and relax. Standard amenities include WiFi, flatscreen TV, DVD player, minibar, coffee/tea facilities, slippers and safe. Even the cheapest rooms have several windows grabbing you outlooks to abundant greenery and the pool, if not the sea.
Along the beachfront stretches a large infinity pool rimmed by loungers and sculptures of Khmer-style deities. You’ll also find a Thai massage pavilion and a restaurant and bar offering beachfront dining. The young receptionists did an excellent job of showing us the options and making us feel welcome.
Chivapuri is one of only a few luxury options in an area with mostly cheap bungalows for backpackers. Set off the beach alongside the canal that gives Khlong Kloi its name, Chaipura Resort has similarly cushy villas perched near some mangroves. Otherwise you might consider heading across the bay to Nirvana Resort, which is cheaper than Chivapuri and also quite romantic.
