Intimate Thaidaho Vista Resort offers comfy rooms, tremendous views and a high degree of environmental responsibility—it took its name from combining the owners’ shared homelands: Thailand and the American state of Idaho.

Stroll through the cafe featuring baked goods and artwork by the talented Thai side of the couple in charge to see the finest view found anywhere on Ko Mak, possibly even the entire Ko Chang archipelago. A breeze usually blows as visitors gaze down over Ao Phra, Ao Suan Yai, Ko Kham and the blue sea reaching out to Ko Chang’s mountains. On a clear day you can see Cambodia.

Connected by a terracotta walkway, the concrete buildings take full advantage of the vista by way of tinted-glass doors fronting each of the four guestrooms. They all come with one king-size bed and are best suited to couples and solo travellers. Groups needing multiple rooms should inquire well in advance.

The room we checked out was immaculate and equipped with a large hot-water bathroom, free WiFi, tasteful Buddhist art and a fan in addition to the air-con. This was on the ground floor but a slightly more expensive room on the second floor comes with the best views, we were told. We liked the amber and ocher colour scheme and how all rooms open to a grassy courtyard with plenty of lounge chairs and benches. Guests also get a shared kitchen with a fridge, grill and purified water free of charge.

Thaidaho’s owners are among the most eco-friendly we’ve come across in Thailand, selling no disposable items (such as plastic bottles) while using washable stainless steel and glass straws, collecting bypass water from a RO filtration system to irrigate the onsite garden, and powering much of the property through solar panels. They’re also really interesting people who are a pleasure to chat with.

If you don’t mind staying away from the beach, the location places you almost at the centre of Mak’s main tourism area within a kilometre of both Ao Suan Yai and central Ao Kao. Thaidaho is often full and should that be the case, neighbouring Islanda Resort and Good Time Resort are both solid alternatives offering broad vistas of their own.

Note that smoking is not allowed at Thaidaho and the owners close the resort for rainy season from June to October. Rates fall by a few hundred baht in shoulder months, and rise by the same amount from Christmas into January.
