Easy to miss amid the gold and fabric shops on bustling Na Mueang Rd, Sawasdee Hotel’s prime advantage is its central location around the corner from the fresh market and a five-minute walk to Soi Kosa.
If you want to be swept up in the fast-paced energy of Khon Kaen, then this is where you want to be. The hotel itself is a somewhat drab affair with a white concrete exterior and small lobby that doesn’t appear to have changed much since the ‘60s. Not for the claustrophobic, the tiny lift is so old that you can actually see the elevator shaft inching by as you ascend -- watch your fingers! All rooms now come with air-con and are featureless but fine for the price. The small digs that we checked out showed some wear and tear on the lower walls but otherwise appeared clean and well maintained, with firm beds on white tile floors, large windows, fridges, TVs and even hot-water kettles. Dark hot-water bathrooms are on the cramped side. Free WiFi is available -- and you’ll probably need it to do your travel research because the staff speaks very little English.
