Makes staying in Loei worth it
Right up there with some of our absolute favourite guesthouses in Thailand, Sugar makes a stay in Loei town worth your while.
With polished wood floors, several windows and decent beds, the accommodation is spacious, immaculate and priced at rates that will make low-budget backpackers very happy. The fan accommodation with shared hot-water bathrooms will be fine for many, and even flashpackers used to spending 1,000 baht a night will be pleased with the more "expensive" rooms with air-con, private baths, fridges and TVs. Set down a quiet side lane within a five-minute walk to the markets, the guesthouse occupies an airy concrete house with a couple of living rooms and a full kitchen with coffee/tea provided for guests. English-speaking owner Pat is a pleasure to be around, and she goes out of her way to help guests with everything from bicycle rental to instructions on how to cross the border. Her family also runs Jai Dee Gaeng Thon, a small resort set along the Mekong a few km from the border crossing in Tha Li district. In a town that otherwise caters mainly to Thais, Sugar makes things easy and comfortable for foreigners travelling on the cheap. Highly recommended.
