Good solid back-up option
Chiang Mai Boutique House may not perhaps figure as your first choice of a place to stay in Chiang Mai, but it does tick all the plan B boxes should your ideal but tiny boutique first choice lack vacancies.
Its location is good. You'll find it at the southern end of Ratchaphakhinai in the Old City and close to the Chiang Mai Gate night market as well as being only a short walk to Tha Pae. Layout is simple but effective, with a decently sized and pleasantly designed pool on one side and a restaurant/cafe to the other. A three-storey bright orange and yellow building stretches from above the cafe and reception and along two sides of the pool and contains the 25 rooms.
All rooms we saw looked similar, although deluxes are slightly more spacious and have more effortmade in the decoration department. There’s nothing truly boutique about the hotel, other than the name. Rooms are simply and tastefully decorated with a few Lanna-style details and decent, varnished wood furniture and large solid beds. Junior suites looked to us just like extra large regular rooms though king suites did have the two rooms the name implies. All rooms appeared well maintained and clean and all come with ensuite hot showers and air-con although their WiFi doesn’t stretch to all rooms. Bathrooms are particularly well decorated.
It's a shame none of the rooms have balconies, while the ground floor rooms are very close to the pool. Our main criticism, although perhaps they were just having a bad day, was the somewhat unsmiling staff which didn’t improve the overall ambience. A bit more character in the communal areas plus friendlier staff, and Chiangmai Boutique would be an excellent spot. As it is—a useful option to keep in mind.
