A good flashpacker option
Somwang Boutique is a well-situated and well laidout flashpacker option with very competitive room rates.
Last time we looked, Somwang consisted of a few simple rooms around a concrete car-park but under new ownership it’s since received a serious makeover. Two brand new blocks of rooms (as of mid-2017) have been constructed and the car-park converted to a rather enticing swimming pool and garden seating area.
The location was always a strong point and now with excellent value for money rooms, Somwang has become a very good option in Chiang Mai’s crowded flashpacker range.
Ratchamanka Soi 2 is a quiet side lane connecting the eastern moat road, Moonmuang, with Ratchamanka Road as it cuts through the old town. Wat Chedi Luang is then about five minutes’ walk away, Tha Pae and the bars of Loi Kroh around a minute and the night bazaar 10 to 15 minutes on foot.
Off the narrow lane, the decently sized pool with a surrounding small but cute garden opens up ahead of you with a white painted, two-storey block on either side. A third, three-storey building provides additional rooms to the rear. Drinks are served poolside but with space at something of a premium the included breakfast, and indeed lunch and dinner, are available in a separate restaurant on the opposite side of the soi.
Rooms themselves are a fair size, comfortable and clean, and come with security box, fridge, cable TV, hot showers, WiFi and free tea and coffee. Bathrooms are well laid out and decor is simple but effective.
They have squeezed a lot into a small area and one concern for us would be noise levels and privacy (or lack of) in the ground floor rooms, which are only separated from the pool. open until 22:00, by a narrow walkway. Staff members were chirpy, with plenty of travel info and assistance available. For the published rates Somwang represents a very good deal.
