An excellent new entry
With a great riverside location, pool and good value rooms, 2017-opened Riverside Floral is a very welcome addition to Chiang Mai’s accommodation scene.
Several hotel choices lie along this stretch of Charoen Rat Road on the banks of the Ping River, but recently built Floral Inn seems to have had the initiative to fit comfortably into a compromise mid-standard, mid-price category so they get our vote in these parts.
Being new when we stopped by, everything was of course spotless with very bubbly, honeymoon period staff on hand. Correspondingly, as they were just opened, it was slightly sterile, but a bit more of a lived-in feel will improve ambience, and let’s hope not compromise the friendliness and cleanliness. The potentially very cute riverside garden with accompanying pool should also benefit from a few rainy seasons worth of growth.
Decor is white throughout, including the exteriors of the four-floor building, communal areas and room interiors. As the name suggests, there are plenty of orchids and flower tableaux dotted around to break up the starkness. Furniture is all brand spanking new and modern and all rooms come with cable TV, WiFi, fridge, tea and coffee, safety deposit boxes and well-designed ensuite bathrooms. Superior rooms lack balconies and are located at the front of the hotel facing the road while deluxe ones are larger as well as coming with pleasant balconies. River views are obviously the best option, though you will pay quite a bit more and they are also the most in demand.
As far as communal areas go, there’s a spacious, bright lobby with an adjacent breakfast seating section. French doors open onto the pool and garden, which descends to the river in a series of steps.
The location is a fair distance from the Old City but Worarot Market is just across the river from Riverside Floral and the night bazaar is only a 15-minute walk away. Walking south along Charoen Rat takes you past Good View and a string of riverside cafes and restaurants, or you could take a stroll north up the same road to the very good Monsoon Tea.
Staff were enthusiastic, friendly and helpful and receptionists spoke very good English. All in all this is a definite favourite pick of ours in the Chiang Mai flashpacker to midrange scene.
