Lovely views in a great garden
Turn left after Tha Ton Chalet down a narrow lane past a string of riverside chalet resorts to reach Khunmai Baansuan Resort, tucked some 500 metres away—our flashpacker choice in the area.
They have a lovely and spacious garden with lawns and flowering shrubs leading down to the river and views of the forest on the far bank. It’s only a five to ten-minute walk from the main drag but you could be right out in the countryside. There’s a choice of rooms in a new, two-storey block overlooking the garden or individual chalets in the garden itself and along the riverbank.
The hotel-style rooms in the new block are plain white and a bit stark in appearance but are clean and well-appointed, coming with air-con, en-suite bathrooms with hot showers, fridge and cable TV. The chalets are attractive and homely with wood-finished exteriors, varnished bamboo panels on the inside and wooden furniture including good-sized beds. All have cosy little balconies and are equipped with air-con, hot showers and WiFi.
The newly built restaurant with a terrace overlooking the Kok River serves up good nosh as well as complimentary breakfasts and the rates are reasonable. There is not too much in the way of Western food on offer, but the Thai and northern Thai options are good and the restaurant is open all year.
Staff, organised by owner Khun Mai herself, are friendly and efficient and Mai is certainly attentive to her guests. They can organise boats to pick-up directly at the resort pier for a very reasonable 2,000 baht (or 400 per person), provide free bicycles for guests and motorbikes can be hired for between 200 and 300 baht per day.
Overall Khunmai Baansuan offers a family atmosphere, a wonderful setting and, for what you get, reasonable rates.
