Khunmai Baan Suan is the most upmarket choice of a string of riverside resorts in Tha Ton, and is a great option as it offers well-appointed chalets or rooms set amid spectacular gardens.
Turning left after the Tha Ton Chalet takes you down a narrow lane past the riverside resorts: Baansuan is tucked some 500 metres away, but before the Thaton River View Resort.
Their spacious garden with lawns and flowering shrubs leads down to the river and has views of the forest on the far bank. It's only a five-minute walk from the main drag, but you could be right out in the country.
There’s a choice of rooms in a two-storey block overlooking the garden or individual chalets in the garden itself and along the riverbank. The hotel-style rooms are slightly on the small size but well-appointed and -maintained and come with air-con, ensuite bathrooms with hot showers and cable TV. The air-con chalets are spaced out well and very attractive with wood finishing, wooden furniture and great balconies plus hot showers and WiFi. Breakfast is included in the room rate.
Staff, organised by owner Khun Mai herself, are friendly and efficient and Mai’s very attentive though apologises for her poor English. (It’s not bad!) The newly built restaurant with a terrace overlooking the Kok serves up good nosh too and rates are reasonable. There's not too much in the way of Western food but the Thai and north Thai options are good. The family atmosphere is welcoming, the setting is wonderful and, for what you get, the rates are reasonable.
