A newish spot just on the north side of town as you exit towards Lak Taeng, the Heun Mhok Kham has a choice of air-con cooled chalets in a garden or fan rooms in a one-storey block.

“Resort” is pushing it a bit and unfortunately aside from a sachet of instant coffee and a round of 7-eleven bread, for breakfast facilities are non-existent. This is a shame as the terrace in their cafe area where you sup said instant coffee would make for a very pleasant little cafe and bar area.

Although rooms are reasonably maintained you get the impression this establishment was set up a few years ago to cater to expected local tourists who just never turned up and interest has correspondingly waned. Indeed the lowered room rates from when we first visited in 2015 are significant. Service is perfunctory yet polite (although with very little English spoken) but it did take a couple of visits by the gardener to get the hot water and air-con actually working and he couldn’t do a lot about the WiFi.

The peach-coloured chalets are airy, light and spacious and set on a hillside amid well-tended gardens. They all come with large balconies plus fridge, hot showers and intermittent WiFi with cable TV offering a solitary English language channel.

Enjoy the light show.

The fan rooms are in a single-storey block looking onto the car-park but were as cramped and dingy as the chalets are airy and spacious.

If you’re on a fan room budget then we’d head instead to Ginggarla but if you fancy a spacious chalet this isn’t a bad choice—just stock up with refreshments in the convenience store down the road then kick back and enjoy the view from your balcony.
