A budget version of the hotel of the same name, the Namkhong Guesthouse does have one up on its more expensive elder sibling and that’s a swimming pool.

There are not many of these around in Chiang Khong! The entrance is located on the west side of the main street – near Green Inn and the 7-eleven – and leads down a driveway off the main road to a carpark, behind which is a garden and a sprawling collection of wooden and concrete blocks of rooms. There’s no river view but the garden is well maintained with plenty of seating areas and they’re clearly aiming at providing chill-out, have a dip, grab your book and a cold drink or get a cheap room for a few hours kinds of options for people waiting for transfers to Huay Xai. (Including of course, those travellers who’ve purchased Namkhong’s own package!)

The principal block is two-storey, ochre coloured and nicely finished with wooden fittings and varnished teak floors. These spacious air-con rooms are nicely decorated with hot shower and balconies out front. (There are reductions if you don’t use the air-con.) They also have one-storey wooden blocks with fan-cooled rooms – with or without ensuite bathrooms – though being a relatively new guesthouse the shared shower room options are, for a change, clean and well decorated (also varnished teak), and comfortable rather than being just afterthoughts out back that the owners haven’t bothered to upgrade, as is often the case. Fan-cooled rooms are spacious and attached, or shared, bathrooms clean. There’s a cafe/restaurant area with a used book exchange and nightly movies shown. All round, this is an excellent spot and if you’re going to be sitting on a slow boat for the next two days you could perhaps forgo a Mekong view in Chiang Khong to stay here.
