Another in the series of, hard to find but worth seeking out Chiang Rai guesthouses, the Akha River House is not a place you’d stumble upon by accident but it is starting to build a good reputation and can get very busy during high season.

You’ll need to head down to the new Kok bridge – a continuation of Rattana Khet Road – but instead of going over the bridge take the side road heading down to the left. Akha River is on your left set on the riverbank, facing a channel of the Kok River. (Around 10 to 15 minutes walk from the clock tower.) Out back there’s a collection of basic and dingy rooms around a small car-park, which must have been the original buildings, but out front, facing the river, they’ve added a wonderful two storey, ochre coloured, new building housing a dozen or so excellent rooms.

All rooms have small terraces overlooking the lawn and garden leading down to the river, (it’s not the full Kok, just a narrow side channel though). Interiors are also ochre/beige with varnished wood fittings – doors, window frames, furniture – and very well appointed with cable TV, fridge, air-con, WiFi and huge bathrooms. The beds are made out of varnished, giant bamboo and the decoration is, as the name implies, Akha. These could easily pass for at least 3* rooms but the rates are well cheaper.

Akha River House is run by villagers from an Akha settlement northwest of Chiang Rai where they also run the intriguing looking Akha Hill House. (We were unable to reach the village due to rainy season weather conditions but you can check their website.) They offer interesting looking treks based around the Akha Hill House. Staff were friendly with a good level of spoken English.

Also popular during high season is their large bar, cafe area containing, astonishingly, a full sized snooker table in immaculate condition! There’s a cocktail menu, food menu and during busy months live music. The bar area is all outdoor with wooden tables and chairs and a fire place though since the bar can get busy and opens until 00:30 you may be better trying to get a room at the far end of the building.
