Best deal for a large hotel
The modern Wang Thong towers over the centre of Mae Sai from its position just east of the main road, close to the bridge, and offers 150 or so rooms of standard hotel quality spread across some eight storeys.
While they are somewhat devoid of local colour, they are comfortable and well appointed with TV, fridge, WiFi and large bathroom with hot shower. All rooms also come with balconies, some of which look back over Mae Sai, and others across the river to Burma. (Tha latter are a bit pricier.) Rates include a buffet breakfast in their spacious restaurant though this is aimed mainly at Asian tastes. Below is an approximate indication of rates and while they don’t have a website, you can get more precise prices on a booking website if you know your dates. While the fan-cooled rooms may seem a bit pricy, they are as well appointed as the air-con ones. Staff didn’t speak much English but were helpful enough. The location is central and the facilities are decent. These include a pleasant outdoor coffee shop/bar, an indoor restaurant and a swimming pool. We reckon for much of the year they have problems filling the vast place and with a bewildering range of discounts, deals and seasonal rates on offer you should be able to find something that’s right for you.
