In our opinion the best value, most convivial and most attractive guesthouse in the whole area isn’t actually in Mae Salong but in nearby Hin Taek (now officially renamed Thoed Thai) 25 kilometres down the road at Rimtaan Guesthouse.

Situated at the entrance to the town, on the left of the main road as you arrive and with various chalets and bungalows set amid lush gardens leading down to the Khan River, the guesthouse is an absolute delight. On entering the sign-posted yard you’ll find the reception and cafe area beyond a small carpark, opposite a dormitory block, with the garden stretching away beyond, partially concealing, among the foliage, ferns and orchids, their range of accommodation options.

The choice is between rooms in a small, one-storey block and individual chalets; small and large, fan or air-con. The bungalows are single or double with twin bed rooms in the block. Excellent, large, stream-side chalets go for a bit more but are still a great deal. Interior decor is simple though some of the more recently done-up rooms are looking quite sharp with attractive pale grey walls and dark floor tiles and all are well-maintained, clean and comfortable. New electricity fittings had been installed since our last visit as well as welcome bedside lamps while even the oldest rooms come with ensuite bathrooms, hot showers, WiFi and small balconies.

The collection is quite eclectic but prices vary little so, with availability in these parts not generally a concern, you can just look around and see what takes your fancy. The dormitory-style room with a dozen or so beds is actually intended for student or scout groups and the like although if it wasn’t in use and you’re on a budget you could always request a single bed in it.

Owner John and family are extremely friendly and helpful. He used to be a translator for US advisors in Laos during the late 60s, early 70s, so language certainly isn’t a problem and nor would there be a lack of tales and anecdotes of the area’s rich recent history. There’s also a wealth of contemporary local information on offer—including potential hikes, hill-top temples or village visits—while the cafe area is a convivial spot for morning coffee or an evening beer. Given a bit of warning they can knock you up some food too, though there are plenty of options in the village just down the road. Breakfast as such isn’t included but there’s free tea and coffee throughout the day and usually some fruit on offer.

This would be a fine guesthouse anywhere but considering it’s totally in the middle of nowhere, it’s highly commendable.
