Our pick for Lamphun
Tiny Lamphun doesn’t have too many accommodation options but the mid-range Phaya Inn is certainly an excellent one so unless you insist on a pool or have serious budget concerns, this is the town’s best choice.
While not right in the old town itself, the Inn is just a short walk from the centre and a pleasant 500-metre or so stroll along the riverbank will see you in front of Wat Phra That Haripunchai, the town’s most prestigious site. While Lamphun doesn’t exactly suffer from too much noisy traffic or a late night bar scene, the location also means you’re guaranteed a peaceful night’s sleep.
Phaya Inn boasts a well-maintained garden and consists of a three-storey block of rooms and a separate restaurant, lobby and cafe area. Both buildings are raised on stilts with the ground floor of the residential section being reserved for parking and the cafe looking out over the garden.
The buildings are new and primarily of concrete construction but the layout is thoughtful and the teak furniture and Lanna knick-knacks lend a local touch without being over the top. Rooms are uncluttered and tastefully finished with all the accessories you’d expect from a mid-range hotel: minibar, cable TV, free and efficient WiFi, tea and coffee plus a small balcony for each room.
The equally well maintained cafe and hang-out area serves a simple complimentary breakfast of tea or coffee and fruit and is open the rest of the day for hot and cold drinks. There’s no restaurant service but you’re close to the town’s cafes and eateries and staff are happy for you to bring takeaways or 7-eleven beers back.
Staff are pleasant, friendly and low-key with good English and plenty of local information at hand. Free bicycles ideal for checking out the town’s sites are offered to guests as well.
Phaya Inn has a fine location, good value for money rooms and great staff, making it our clear fave in Lamphun.
