Jongkham Place

Classy chalets in a garden setting

More on Mae Hong Son

Cute and well-appointed wooden chalets in a well-tended garden make Jongkham Place a top flashpacker choice in town, though with just four rooms available this is another that’s worth reserving in advance year-round.

Travelfish says:

The mini-resort is located amid a bunch of accommodation options along the lane parallel to the lake, though there is neither direct access to or even views of the lake. The layout is deceptive as your first views will be of two large buildings either side of the driveway leading into the garden. Both appear new and are two-storey with varnished wood upper floors. The left-hand one as you enter is set up as a cafe restaurant with a terrace area and teak pillars though we’ve never seen it in use while the right-hand one, above a small reception, looks as if it contains rooms—which of course it does—but when we visited during low season, it served as the owners’ private residence.

As we said deceptive and while in theory, it could offer probably ten rooms as well as a comfortable restaurant, accommodation for guests is generally limited to the four small but cute chalets to the rear. In previous years two large family rooms in the main house have also been rented out to visitors though staff were a bit vague on this when we enquired so don’t count on it. In so far as the chalets themselves are occupied for much of the year we can only assume the owners don’t need any extra income.

The four identical chalets are finished with varnished wood walls and verandas looking over the small but immaculately maintained garden area. Interiors continue the varnished wood theme, though with tiled floors. The minimal decor and furnishings manage to save the limited space feeling too cluttered. There are air-con and fans provided though the former is rarely needed in this mountain town. Rooms also come with cable TV, fridges and clean ensuite bathrooms and hot water showers.

Staff members we met were efficient and helpful and there’s the usual information and assistance available but don’t expect the more intimate, family atmosphere of nearby Baan Mai.

Jongkham Place is quiet, comfortable and excellent value for money and the central location is convenient—don’t forget to book in advance.
