Cheap and cheerful with the best view in town
Another option in the small, family-run guesthouse style, The Like View, (yes the name confused us too, but it isn’t a typo), is another favourite in the Jong Kham area and stands out as being the only one in the area with a genuine lake view.
Like View, sometimes written Likeview, is located amid a strip of budget establishments along Udom Chao Nithet Road—almost next door to Baan Mai—and begins at street level with a small and ramshackle cafe seating area. This functions as reception, kitchen and the family daytime living room where the friendly owners serve coffee, cold drinks, breakfasts and simple meal options as well as dishing out travel advice and ticketing assistance. Coffee and food are both very good.
A path to the left leads into another of the street’s long thin gardens stretching down towards the lake with rooms split between a pair of two-storey houses. Both are comprised of concrete ground floors and wooden upper though the larger of the two, near the lake, has an excellent upper floor terrace looking right onto Jong Kham itself.
The budget rooms are an eclectic collection with a couple of older shared bathroom options in the smaller of the two buildings though most have recently been upgraded to ensuite. A dormitory was under construction when we visited during low season in 2017. Around eight beds are planned for the small, fan cooled room which will come with a 100 baht per night, per person, price tag.
In the larger house, some downstairs rooms only offer views of other walls with the best, genuine lake views, reserved for a spacious family room which occupies the entire upper storey. Bear in mind though that in these type of buildings ground floor concrete walled rooms keep out more noise from your neighbours than the first floor wooden partitions will.
Top marks for service and atmosphere, while as far as rooms go—well you get what you pay for. Whether spacious and airy upstairs ones or small shared bathroom versions they are all well maintained and clean and the cheaper options plus the dorm are some of the least expensive rooms in Mae Hong Son at any time of year. Overall this is a decent budget choice.
