The Countryside Resort has been going for a while now but still offers well-maintained bungalows and good service. While it is somewhat out in the sticks, if you don’t mind a walk then it’s a good flashpacker option.

Countryside is located on the track that heads off towards Mae Yen Waterfall from the junction of the Mae Yen and Wiang Nua village roads. It's not so bad if you don’t mind a pleasant morning stroll through the paddy fields to grab some lunch in town, but not great for staggering back in the dark after a night out on Bar Street.

Rooms are smart and clean.

A motorbike would be handy for getting around during the day but we’re not suggesting riding back in the dark after a few beers either. (Pai Hospital‘s 24-hour emergency unit is listed in our orientation section; but if you do want a night on the town then ask the bar or restaurant to call you a taxi!)

The rural setting is very pleasant with the hills around Mae Yen Waterfall providing a backdrop and paddy fields stretching off to the east and west. The resort has a splendid garden too and their unusual octagonal chalets come with rooftop sunset viewing decks. Look on it as a chilling out in the country option, rather than a bar and cafe hopping stay.

The deckchairs could do with a revamp!

Chalets are distinctly unusual and though they don’t have balconies out front they do come with rooftop seating areas reached by a metal ladder. It’s perhaps more gimmick than practical as if it’s raining or the sun’s shining you don’t have anywhere to sit. We’ve never seen parasols on the roof though we guess you could ask for one. Fortunately you do have the option of moseying across to their rather good pool which is lined with deckchairs and straw umbrellas. The pool has a shallow section suitable for young kids, too. If it’s chucking it down then either ask them to call a taxi or grab a table in their restaurant and borrow the Connect 4 set. If they’re not busy they will generally provide a lift into town anyway.

Exteriors are a mix of pebble-dash, stucco and straw roof, while interiors are bright yellow painted with varnished wooden floors. Rooms come with ensuite bathrooms, cable TV, WiFi and fridge, and come with a choice of fan, air-con or larger air-con versions. Decoration is on the kitsch side but rooms are clean.

In our opinion Countryside Resort won’t ever win any design awards, but it is a comfortable little spot with good service and good rates outside of peak season; during quiet periods they may well tempt you with discounts. Online booking rates we checked also provided savings.
