Another of Pai’s long-standing, classic backpacker guesthouses, Mr Jan’s lies off the main drag down a lane between Chaisongkran and Rungsiyanon Roads. It's well worth the effort to seek out if you’re on a tight budget—you won’t find many alternatives in town with 150 baht price tags these days.

The slightly eclectic collection of chalets is dotted around a delightful garden which is decorative as well as functional since it's primarily used for growing herbs used in their special in-house herbal saunas and massages. The guesthouse is on a secondary lane off a lane, then across a courtyard–carpark, so though it is pretty much smack bang in Pai’s geographical centre, this is a peaceful spot.

Frankly, the old fan chalets are a bit past their prime to say the least (Baan Sangheaun’s similarly priced ones are much better), and with management reluctant to even show them to us we doubt they’ll be around much longer. The freshly painted blue air-con chalets are a much better prospect, and at 350 baht for low season and 600 baht for high, still a very good deal.

Each comes with a balcony and deckchairs to peruse the garden from, and interiors—also blue—are spotlessly clean and bright. They’re as well maintained as the fan huts are rundown and though simply furnished and decorated do come with fridge, cable TV and fluffy bed covers for the winter months.

Bathrooms continue the simple but clean theme, and come with efficient hot showers, as do the fan versions. Despite the retro feel there’s WiFi access throughout and the usual travel information and assistance is provided by the very friendly elderly couple who own the guesthouse. Mr Jan's is an excellent deal at any time of year. Don’t forget to try out their herbal treatments!
