Long-running Pai River Corner is still going strong in what has to be Pai’s prime location. While it may just be starting to show its age around the edges, rates are far more competitive than some similar but newer Pai alternatives.

Not only is their centrally located riverbank site—at the far end of Chaisongkran—a top piece of real estate, but their sprawling garden and lawns still manage to give an out of town country feel, and they’ve refrained from filling the space up with additional chalets. It's strange but commendable, as you could easily fit three or four times the number of bungalows in the space without it feeling overcrowded.

There’s a large riverbank restaurant, Kanad, on the left as you enter the garden with a wide terrace stretching along the grassy rim. This is popular with non-residents as well and offers decent Thai fare at sensible prices in its sumptuous setting. To the right is a small reception area beyond which a path leads past their medium-sized pool to the main string of rooms. On the farther side of the lush garden is another row of well-spaced out bungalows.

Options go from villa deluxe via villa suite to their top-of-the-range villa Jacuzzi. All are extremely well decorated and appointed with each of the substantial villas having an upstairs and downstairs room, both of which come with tempting balconies. Deluxe are smaller and seemed to be restricted to the upper floors, and are comfortable with understated Lanna touches and wood panelling. These come as twins or doubles.

Ground floor suites are genuine ones, with bedroom and connecting lounge and a wider selection of heavy wooden furniture in the large space. If your budget stretches to it, the spacious Jacuzzi versions have additional private courtyards and family-sized Jacuzzis. All are well looked after and maintained and indeed the first thing we scribbled down in our notes was ... “smells good”.

Facilities correspond to what you’d expect from an upmarket resort, though when we visited during low season staffing levels could curtail service somewhat. Low season rates are exceptionally good value, though the high and peak season rates are very hard on the wallet.

Deluxe villas during quiet months are definitely worth a splurge—as to the rest, it depends on your budget. Note also that when we visited in July they were offering walk-in rates below the published ones; we’d guess online agents’ rates would be the same. Rates include breakfast and a return transfer to Pai airport. (Useful if there are actually any flights going, otherwise they’d no doubt offer a transfer to the bus station instead.)
