Simple and unpretentious with a small string of classic wooden chalets, Pai Lanna is one of the best options in the countryside budget to flashpacker resort range. Conveniently, it lies within easy walking distance of Pai town, too.

Cross the road bridge and take the Wiang Nua left fork and you’ll see the entrance to Pai Lanna a short distance on your right next to Pairadise. The entrance lane leads up a hill to where the resort is positioned with chalets backing on to fields to the right and a cafe on the left affording awesome views back across the valley.

The garden is immaculate, with pleasant seating areas, and the wood, bamboo and thatch chalets are small and simple in a classic Thai backpacker style. Inside they are comfortably fitted out with little balconies, ensuite bathrooms and ceiling fans. There is also a large air-con chalet but this was rented out long term when we visited and they weren’t sure what standard rates would be.

Walls are in Pai’s ubiquitous woven bamboo style, but this time without any solid backing so it’s very fortunate that Pai isn’t in a typhoon zone. Decor and furniture are spartan but the bed seemed comfortable enough and comes with a mosquito net. Given the width of the walls, it’s also fortunate that chalets are laid out not too close together. Bathrooms are equally basic but clean, with hot water showers.

The large restaurant and cafe is perhaps their strong point. It provides fantastic views across the valley and town and gets good reviews, though when we passed by in low season they were only offering drinks. Breakfast is included with high season rates only, but this is a fine spot to sup a sundowner. Service is helpful if minimal, but their low and mid-season rates do offer good value even if we’d baulk at paying over a 1,000 baht for a basic bamboo hut during busy periods.
