Pai Klang Na has refined the design of classic Thai bamboo huts to the ultimate level. While there’s no shortage of resorts in this area offering chalets, these are undoubtedly the classiest you’ll come across around here.

There are just seven chalets at Pai Klang Na set in a line, with paddy behind and another in front. (Klang na means “amid paddy fields”.) We’ve visited several times over the years and keep expecting them to have added another half-dozen on their spacious grounds yet despite being regularly full at all times of the year they have so far resisted the temptation.

While the bungalows may appear somewhat basic from afar, get closer and you'll notice the thoughtful touches of decoration and craftsmanship, plus interiors that are absolutely spot on. All are equipped with air-con, fridge, tea and coffee, safety deposit box, cable TV, DVD players and WiFi as well as great little verandas for admiring your serene country views.

The owners have also managed to squeeze in some different furniture such as floor cushions, writing desk and a bookcase, without cramping things too much. Finishing is not surprisingly in pleated bamboo—both floor and walls—and even the bathrooms are tastefully decorated with artwork on the ochre walls.

Plenty of space to relax in.

There’s a covered bamboo sala in the garden providing a tempting spot to kick back with a book or just admire the views, while the small restaurant is cosy with a choice of chairs or cushions. They provide hot and cold drinks as well as the inclusive breakfasts. In contrast to many other spots it is also well-staffed (in both quality and quantity), even for low season.

Klang Na is found down a sealed track running through farmland between the Mae Yen Village road and the start of the eponymous waterfall trail so, on the east side of the valley and we reckon a 20 minute or so walk into town. They will drop you in Pai if not busy but a motorbike would be handy unless you’re happy just kicking back in the country setting or getting the most out of your excellent chalet.

Attention to detail is remarkable, service excellent and value for money guaranteed even for high season. This is a justifiably very popular spot and availability will be an issue even in low season. Reservations are essential.
