Pai In Town, right next door to Li Lu, has equally clean and comfortable though simpler rooms at substantially better rates. While they claim no high season supplements, they do add on a huge extra whack for peak periods.

It's located in a good position on Rungsiyanon, but set slightly back from the road behind their substantial reception and cafe, so it ought to be quiet enough. The front building is a well-restored, mainly wooden construction with a few Moorish-style architectural flourishes, such as the archways, reflecting the Muslim ownership (as does their ban on alcohol consumption). A wrought iron winding staircase leads up to a first floor balcony, though rooms for visitors are located in a new but undistinguished block at the rear.

The two-floor building, if we counted correctly, has six rooms on the ground floor and another half dozen upstairs and is well designed, with wide windows rendering even the lower rooms bright enough. Aside from the beige painted walls, decor is pretty much non-existent and furniture minimal, though rooms are neat and clean, and superior ones come with small balconies and fridges.

Air-con and WiFi seem to work efficiently and all rooms have clean bathrooms with hot showers. (We’d suggest they dump the retro brown blankets and invest in some fresh duvets.) Both standard and superior rooms come in double or twin bed formats.

Easy to find.

Pai In Town is a good example of low season rates reflecting low season staffing and services. When we visited in July there was just the one very friendly woman responsible for the cafe, reception and housekeeping on her own. So while this is nothing fancy, if you’re looking for a simple, clean room with a good location this is a very good choice. Outside of Christmas and New Year it would be an unbeatable choice for high season. Due to the small number of rooms, reservations are recommended.
