Worth splashing the cash for
While slightly away from the centre, we reckon delightful Phoomthai Garden Hotel is still well worth considering -- it’s probably our fave pick for Phrae.
A couple of three-storey blocks in an L-shape are set in a very cute garden area, with a pool one side and cafe on the other. They did well to preserve some mature trees during construction and the garden, though small, is lush with ferns and orchids. This is a wonderful spot to relax and despite being only a 10-minute or so walk from the old town, this is definitely the best fit for the ’urban oasis’ cliche in Phrae. The old block is white and the new one ochre, though neither is very old, and both are well maintained and pleasantly decorated with a few Lanna flourishes. Ditto the rooms, which are spacious, airy, comfortable and simply yet tastefully decorated. All rooms come with cable TV, WiFi, fridge, tea and coffee making facilities and excellent bathrooms -- but best of all French doors leading on to tempting balconies.
In addition to the pool facilities include free bicycles for guests, an in-house spa, a cocktail bar and a hotel tuk tuk, which provides free airport transfers or return trips to the old town for 50 baht per head. Their inclusive buffet breakfast is jolly good and if you don’t want to walk into town for dinner the Phoomthai restaurant serves up fine and reasonably priced northern Thai food. Efforts have been made to cater to foreign, as well as local, tourists and helpful staff had reasonable levels of English. For what you get, and considering it’s only 200 baht more than Maeyom, Phoomthai represents a great deal for flashpackers. Prices quoted here are their standard published rates but do check their website or Agoda for promotions, discounts and packages. An extra bed is 500 baht.
