A solid choice
Occupying a large wood-and-cement house in a good location, Papong Homestay offers comfortable rooms in a main house and a couple of rooms with furnished terraces in an attached building out back.
All rooms come with private hot-water bathrooms, air-con, firm double beds, several windows and TVs. The 500-baht editions on the ground floor are fine, though we’d probably cough up an extra 100 baht for a slightly larger room with a private entrance and terrace facing the small car park and within steps of the river. The rooms that we checked out appeared well kept.
Living in the upstairs section, a smiley mother/daughter team runs the homestay and can speak a little English; we also noticed a couple of spirited little kids running around. Simple Thai meals are available, served at an inviting open-sided terrace with a few tables and benches set up next to the riverside lane.
From here it’s a five-minute walk to Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat, 10 minutes to the bus stop and around 15 minutes to the historical park.
