More on Umphang

Stretching along a hillside filled with avocado, mango and jasmine trees on the western edge of town, Tu Ka Su Cottage boasts the most comfortable rooms that we came across in Umphang.

Travelfish says:

Constructed from a mix of logs, wood planks, bamboo, cement, bricks and fake-wood siding, each of the many rooms look slightly different from the next. Some come two or three to a building while most are freestanding bungalows, but all are equipped with air-con in addition to moveable fan, TV, fridge, hot water and firm bed (or two) with soft linens and mosquito nets. We loved the large porches with comfortable wood loungers -- and mountain views if you’re lucky. The 600-baht room that we stayed in had nearly a dozen screened windows to go with a spacious bathroom accessed by four steps. A bit of dust lingered in the corners but overall it was well kept. Pricier rooms are located closer to the reception area, tour desk and restaurant, where instant coffee, toast and patongo (fried dough) are complimentary in the mornings. Free WiFi works only in the common areas.

Rooms are spread over quite a large area and accessed by meandering concrete walkways -- they’re identified only by Thai-script names, rather than numbers, so do pay attention the first time you leave! With an owner known for his love of deep-jungle exploration, Tu Ka Su is also a fine place to book a tour. It’s about a kilometre from here to the town centre.
