Occupying part of a nondescript white building along the main drag and operated by a lovely Scottish woman, Elephant’s End was one of the most pleasant surprises we came across in the area.

We reckon around 60 square metres in size, both the sea-view and “mountain-view” rooms were done up with glossy white floors, nearly wall-size glass doors opening onto large balconies, and fluffy beds with high-class linens and enough different kinds of pillows for the pillow fight of the century. They also come with shiny LCD TVs, fridges, safes, bathrooms, foldout sofas, tables, desks and carpets, all modern with a leaning towards white and cool shades of blue. A family of four should easily be able to settle into one of these rooms. Downstairs you’ll find an atmospheric cafe and bar doing Western-Thai fusion prepared by the owner and a Thai man, both with considerable chef experience -- do stop by for a bite even if not staying here. The only possible drawback is the three-minute walk to the beach. We were quoted well below the rates listed on the guesthouse’s website and noticed similar deals through Just don’t be surprised if the rooms go up to the full 2,500 to 3,500 baht a night in late December and January; they’re definitely worth it. Just up the road, Gut and Get Bed and Breakfast is set in a similar roadside building and has smaller but also comfy rooms at similar rates.
