La Laanta Hideaway Resort
Set smack in the middle of the beach, La Laanta Hideaway was the first upscale resort to appear on Mai Pai, though it will probably won't be the last.
The owners have done a fine job of creating an intimate boutique resort that blends into the landscape; we hardly noticed it from the other side of the beach. 20 polished concrete villas with thatch roofs are set amid lush foliage near a small but well-done two-tiered swimming pool. Designed to evoke the feel of an exotic getaway and with over-the-top names like "Sunset Splendor Villa", the spacious rooms are filled with rattan, silk and wood flourishes, soft lanterns, tasteful floral art and wide glass windows. Sumptuous queen-size beds are accompanied by floor cushions, satellite TVs, minibars, coffee machines, safes and hot-water bathrooms with high-quality modern appliances. The staff member we met was polite and the resort offers a small restaurant and spa. Our only complaint is how the dark-brown beach loungers become extremely hot to the touch when the sun beats down on them.
