Homely and comfortable
A friendly family runs Grandmom Place, keeping the genuine Thai smile alive as it sadly becomes harder to find in many popular destinations.
Accessed by stairs, two spacious rooms come on all three upper floors of this remodelled building that puts you within a five-minute stroll of downtown and the riverfront. Designed for function over style, they have comfy queen beds raised off tile floors, larger-than-normal fridges, TVs, WiFi, desks, chairs on the large balconies and good-size hot-water bathrooms.
Front rooms bag you views over the river and all the way to Khao Kanab Nam and beyond, while those on the backside overlook Chao Fah Road. We prefer the fourth floor because the view is worth the climb.
Next door, U Residence is another decent flashpacker choice; there you pay around 500 baht more for a boutique-y design but also an inviting common room. Another similar choice is The 9th House over on Chao Fah, which is also a bit pricier. Grandmom is a serviced apartment type guesthouse best suited to couples and solo travellers. Though you shouldn’t expect a social scene, cafe or tour bookings, discounts are offered for long stays and the location is excellent.
