Good value, great service
Homely Ban Thanyanan has a handful of rooms in a brightly painted single-floor concrete building to go with a couple of larger villas, all set on a tidy property next a house where the owner, Ms Thanyanan, lives with her son.
Surrounded by coconut groves on the inland side of the beach road, the comfort, value and service found here make a five-minute walk to the sand worth it.
With flush-white walls, tile floors, screened windows and small tables out the front, the cheaper rooms are spacious and immaculately kept. They aim for function over form and lack decoration, but you do get a loveseat and coffee table along with a firm queen bed with fuzzy leopard-print linens. All rooms are also equipped with LCD TVs, wall-mounted fans in addition to quiet air-con units, good-size fridges, hot-water kettles, complimentary tea and instant coffee, and basic hot-water bathrooms with shower curtains. Good options for families, the villas are similarly equipped but with twice the space.
In an area where comprehensible English is hard to come by even at the larger resorts, Ms Thanyanan speaks solid English that sounds even better thanks to her cheerful personality. She’s also very helpful, arranging motorbike rental and dropping off guests at the minibus stops for free. The free WiFi worked consistently well for us, and we even made out with some of Thanyanan’s own homemade Thai sweets for free on one morning. She also provided some good insights on what to prioritise when exploring the area.
This is a small place with no reception desk; if you arrive and don’t immediately see someone, walk over to the house and shout “hello.” Or, if you call ahead of time, there’s a good chance that Thanyanan will pick you up in town. There are limited rooms and long-stay guests are common, so reserving ahead of time is recommended.
