More inviting than most
A step up from most of Cha-am’s cheap guesthouses in terms of atmosphere and cleanliness, Pa Ka Ma is a small family-run place on Soi 1 North just off the beach road.
You can tell there’s something different about Pa Ka Ma after being asked to take off shoes at the Japanese-style wooden entranceway and seeing the soft lanterns, flags and fairy lights that decorate the polished concrete lobby. A young Thai couple with an adorable little one runs the place and while English can be a challenge, the vibe is calm and refreshing after dealing with the mercantile attitudes found at many Cha-am guesthouses.
A small number of rooms cover the upper floors, reached by stairs and each with a fair amount of space. Soft fabrics dangling over firm double beds join slender wood-and-glass windows and perhaps light-yellow or violet hues brushed into the walls. Equipped with fridges, TVs, little tables, free WiFi and small hot-water wet bathrooms, the rooms that we checked out appeared well kept.
Pa Ka Ma is one of at least half a dozen small and cheap guesthouses on Soi 1 North, the first side lane on your left after turning north onto the beach road off Naranthip. While there is a cluster of possibly seedy massage shops at the far end of the lane, overall Soi 1 North does not have the in-your-face seediness that blights Soi Bus Station.
