If you don’t mind a 20-minute walk into town, the English-speaking owners of 2N Guesthouse offer impeccable service and spotless rooms that are a solid step up from digs in the downtown guesthouses for only a little more cash.
More of a “bed and breakfast” than a “guesthouse,” the charming property includes six rooms on both floors of a beige concrete building set beside the owners’ home. Sporting soft linens and thin blankets on comfortable queen-size beds raised off light-green tile floors, the spacious rooms also come with air-con, fridges, TVs, small desks, private balconies with plastic chairs and large bathrooms with hot-water showers behind curtains. Our only complaint was how curtains on the front windows were too thin to block out the outside lighting, which stayed on late into the night.
We liked the framed photo of Khao Luang Cave above the bed, and the free WiFi worked well in our upper corner room. The value is excellent, especially when you throw in a complimentary breakfast of toast, coffee, sticky rice sweets and an assortment of fruit, served to tables in a garden courtyard with frangipani and fountains out front. Parking is available and bicycles are free, which is good because it’s a long walk along a quiet riverside lane into town.
Formerly working as tour guides, the sister owners speak very clear English, offering maps and generally going beyond expectations to ensure that guests have a good stay in a city that can be challenging for foreigners. Their customer service is what really makes 2N stand out from the pack.
While the not-so-central location will make some travellers skip 2N in favour of downtown guesthouse like White Monkey and JJ Home, it can also be a selling point. The surrounding area is very quiet with an almost rural atmosphere, and you can pedal north along Highway 3176 to take in scenes of rice paddies and old riverside temples. If 2N is full, the nearby Sweet Dreams Guesthouse is also a solid choice.
