Good backpacker gathering spot
Found at a busy intersection near the road leading to Karon beach, Balcony Hostel is certainly not in a scenic part of town, but it’s cheap! Set in a shophouse with bunk-bed dormitory rooms and private rooms, the hostel has a friendly atmosphere with a colourful bar and pool table on the ground floor offering a good venue for meeting other travellers.
Handy as a one-stop shop for your travel needs, the hostel has a tour desk and rents out motorbikes. Being on the outskirts of town is actually a bonus in Patong as it’s possible to walk for at least half a block here without getting hassled for something, and some parking is available along the road, too. The air-con dorm rooms feature four or six beds, each bed with a reading lamp and power outlet, and shared hot water bathrooms. Sliding doors open to balconies, giving the rooms a more bright and airy feel than you might expect in a dorm. The hostel also offers private air-con rooms with a mini-fridge and TV, which are decent enough but not great value for this part of town with some hotels nearby offering cheaper rooms with more facilities. WiFi, bed linens and lockers are included.
