The first sign of life that you see after hours of hiking south along the main trail to Ao Lek and Ao Siad is the word “Pirates” hand-painted on a wood sign and nailed to a tree. Keep walking and a green-and-black sign points left to Green Banana, a pirate-themed bungalow joint run by Thai hippies in a far-flung corner of a far-flung island.

The design expresses the beach-bum persona of the owners, a trio of brothers sporting long hair and Bob Marley T-shirts who once lived on Ko Pha Ngan. Tangled out of driftwood, bamboo and thatch, pavilions fronting the beach are decorated with all sorts of pirate-inspired memorabilia along with hammocks and more of the Rasta colours.

We arrived to find one owner chilling with the only guest staying here at the time, while another snoozed in a hammock behind the bar. Once they were roused, we found that all three spoke clear English and were really friendly despite our clean-cut appearance.

Rudimentary woven bamboo huts stand on log stilts along the beach or among thick palms up a hill reached by steep steps. They come with nothing more than a firm mattress on the floor, mosquito net, porch and windows. Few nails were used, with the logs and bamboo support rods tied together with rope. This is about as back-to-nature as you can get while having a roof over your head. A couple of basic shared bathrooms are situated next to the bar and restaurant—opt for a beach bungalow if you don’t want to navigate the steps at night.

Affording southerly views to Ko Phayam and mangroves at Ko Chang Noi’s far southern point, Green Banana fronts a longer but less sheltered beach than Tommy’s Garden, which is a 20-minute walk west across the bay. The place is accessed by its own rugged trail and we were told that most guests arrive on foot, but you can also call to be picked up by boat. The owners hang around all year, putting up tarps to shield the rain and wind during the rainy months.
