Dorms just off Walking Street
Drawing some of the backpackers who have been priced out of even the most basic bungalows at most beach resorts, Shanti is one of a few newish places filling the dorm niche on Lipe.
Set down a side lane that stays fairly quiet despite its location within steps of central Walking Street, Shanti has six bunks in each of the four mixed dorm rooms, two with air-con and two cooled by fans -- the latter was surprisingly cool on a hot day. In any room you can expect a thick mattress with personal electric outlet, reading lamp, small mirror (an unusual touch), divider between bunks and privacy curtain. Clean hot-water bathrooms are limited in number so be prepared to wait. You also get free WiFi, locker, bicycle use, drinking water, instant coffee and tea, which you can enjoy on a common patio with tables under an awning.
Directly in front of Shanti is Sang Chan Hostel, offering similar fan dorms and private fan rooms relying on shared bathrooms for around 800 baht. You might also check out the air-con dorms at the larger A-Plus Hotel. None of these were offering women-only dorms as of March ’17.
Rates at Shanti fluctuate often and as walk-ins we were quoted 190 baht below the air-con dorm rates listed on the website. Prices may spike considerably at peak times, and Shanti closes from June to October.
