The only option in town for a sea view and direct access to the beach, BP Samila is an ageing property with a swimming pool, fitness centre and hotel bar in a cavernous lobby.

Dated standard rooms in the wide seven-storey building are standard Asian business-type fare, with thin wall-to-wall carpets, TVs, WiFi, desks, minibars, coffee/tea facilities, tubs in the hot-water bathrooms and rattan accents for a much-needed splash of style. The best part is a balcony where you can soak up the salt air, though chairs would be nice. We’d skip the “mountain view” editions and pay the extra 100 baht for a sea-view room, where you can wake up to the sunrise.

This is the kind of place where we’d picture ourselves waking after a wild night in Miami in 1983. A cheesy fountain depicts dolphins and mermaids frolicking beneath a big domed roof in the lobby. Out back, a large lagoon-style pool with kids’ pool overlooks the beach, though spots of algae and a lack of loungers made it look rather unappealing on our visit.

Still, it’s tough to argue with a location that puts the widest stretch of Haad Samila within a quick stumble of your room. Uniformed receptionists and even the security guard were very polite to us. Don’t be surprised if a wedding reception rocks the ballroom during your stay. It’s a two-kilometre trip west from here to the old town.

We suspect someone is singing a bad cover song somewhere out of view in the hotel bar.

The Club Tree Hotel is also worth considering if you you’re looking for a more modern upscale room at similar rates and don’t care about an out-of-the-way location with no sea views.
