Good value with some terrific views
Perched on and sprawling along the hillside above Haad Rin’s sunset side, Suncliff remains one of the best deals in the area for travellers looking for air-con, pool, restaurant, WiFi and tremendous views with a sometimes generous dose of rustic.
No two rooms are the same here, but broadly speaking they fall into two main categories – their cheapest rooms, which are in the building that runs along the road, and a collection of free-standing bungalows scattered across the hillside. The former are totally forgettable but would do for a night at a pinch, while the latter has some memorable and sometimes exotic options which make Suncliff popular among returnees and long-stayers.
The bungalows come in air-con and fan-cooled varieties. Some have great views, others just the jungle. Some have sprawling, multi-level verandas with multiple hammocks, others just the bog-standard issue balcony with hammock. Some are split level, or built atop one another, others are typical beach huts. Some are clean and well maintained, others less so. The larger air-con rooms are sometimes suitable for families (or travelling groups) and facilities include hot water, fridge, TV and patchy WiFi come standard. What we’re trying to say is no two rooms here are the same, and if you’re coming as a walk-in, it is essential you ask to be shown a few rooms.
Suncliff’s’s property is so large that there are three receptions. At the farthest reception from the main entrance, a small-but-charming pool lies about as close to the cliff’s edge as it can get, providing swimmers with an incredible ocean view. Beside the pool is the restaurant which serves up a good selection of Western and Thai dishes, making for a cute little hideaway to chill out in.
