One of the cheapest sets of bungalows in this part of Ko Pha Ngan, Golden Rock has simple thatched roof editions on stilts set in a lawn garden at the extreme southern end of Chao Phao or northern end of Seethanu (depending on your point of view).
Most of the bungalows are back off the beach a short distance, with the small wooden and stilted restaurant enjoying the best placement looking out to sea – the sunsets here can be fab. The fan-cooled rooms have a decent looking bed, mosquito net, small desk and chair, bathroom with cold water and a balcony with hammock – that is about it, but this remains a good deal for the money. Golden Rock attracts a steady flow of longer-stay backpackers and budget travellers and the friendly, very relaxed staff do a good job delivering what their guests need. The vibe could be described as extremely relaxed (even more so than the staff) but it won't be to everyone's taste.
This is a bit of an isolated spot. Immediately to the south of Golden Rock is the nudist stretch of Bovy/Seethanu beach, while you can walk from here to the north to eventually reach Ao Chao Phao. While the restaurant does do simple one plate dishes, (and cold drinks), there are plenty of other options a short scooter ride away.
To find Golden Rock, head north through Seethanu and at the second small set of shops on the coast road, turn left (when you see the tattoo shop on your right) and follow the dirt trail which will take you straight up to the waterfront restaurant. When we asked for a card with contact details, we were told Golden Rock was walk-in only.
