Quiet jungle living
Set back off the beach, inland at the northern end of Haad Thian and yet still only a short walk to both the beach here and Why Nam beach beach over the hill, Beam Bungalows delivers on a great feeling of jungle living.
The mixed-size bungalows sprawl from a frangipani-lined path around and past the restaurant into the trees. They vary from small wood and rattan 400 baht versions up to more modern 1,000 baht stone bungalows, sleeping four and with a simple kitchenette. Bungalow decks include a hammock and some wooden furniture. The smallest bungalows are no great shakes, but for a few more baht you’ll get a decent step up in standards making this a good budgetish option for the bay – so check your room before taking one and ask to see more if the first one isn’t up to scratch. For those on a thrifty budget, there is a dorm above the restaurant which offers beds for 200 baht.
Beam has 24-hour electricity which is rare for Haad Thian and cold-water showers – as with most places here you need to pay for WiFi. The serene restaurant, with a large platform extended out to the front, has a menu of both Thai and international food and is worth the walk even if you are not staying here. Relaxing on the deck here delivers an air of peace and serenity and terrific views over an open grass area and trees to the sea and has a reputation for the best fresh coconuts in the area.
Given the rooms are far simpler here, Beam is a good deal more affordable than Sanctuary, but is quiet isolated, so if you want to be closer to the scene at Sanctuary, consider Love Lips or Family Bungalows, both of which are behind Sanctuary (pass the Wellness Centre and keep going) and have rooms from around the 500 baht mark. If you want more isolation still, pop over the hill to Why Nam.
