Easy to reach luxe
Easily one of the flashest resorts on Ko Pha Ngan's west coast, the decidedly upmarket Kupu Kupu Resort offers a selection of stylish villas between the restaurant and beach along with a second low running along the beachfront – if you're looking for luxe, you're in the right place.
Kupu Kupu is an Indonesian brand, with two resorts on the popular Indonesian island of Bali, and this Ko Pha Ngan property is its first international venture. Most of the villas have their own plunge pool on the balcony, and nearly all enjoy wonderful sea views – the sunsets here can be brilliant.
The room we looked at had sliding glass doors leading into a spacious wood-themed bedroom with stylish touches that made it simple yet plush. The huge bed dominates the room, while a gold leaf-painted standalone bathtub grabs attention in the bathroom. Still, with only a few ultra-luxe touches, the room doesn’t come across ostentatious but rather luxuriously simple. Separate vanities add to the room’s allure for honeymooning couples.
While the main collection of rooms face onto the resort's excellent swimming pool, we preferred the placement of the individual rooms running along the beachfront. Ideally placed for a romantic sunset (which you could enjoy from bed), each has their own splash pool out front, carefully tucked away to avoid too many roving eyes from beach walkers passing by.
Kupu Kupu’s highlight is its lengthy photogenic pool, which extends from the base of the lobby all the way to the beach. Lined by palms and red tented lounge areas, you will take a photo or two, believe us. Should you drag your self down to the beach, there is some decent swimming right out front, while a cluster of boulders immediately to the north are good for clamouring on for sunset, which can be very good along here.
Kupu Kupu has four different types of pool villas, with those running along the beach (the Deluxe Beachfront Pool Villas) being the most expensive. Only the Sea View Suites lack a private splash pool. See their website for full details on rates along with special deals on offer. Do shop arround online to compare rates before deciding to book direct.
Unlike most other Ko Pha Ngan high-end resorts, Kupu Kupu isn’t on the isolated and difficult-to-reach bay of Thong Nai Pan; it’s just ten minutes’ away from Thong Sala pier, the island’s main port of arrival, so you won’t waste precious holiday moments getting to your retreat. That being said, the resort does have an exclusive feel, making it ideal for couples who wish to be able to step away from the madding crowd, especially during Ko Pha Ngan’s Full Moon Party periods.
