Two decent locations
Su Casa runs a small guesthouse on Old Chinese Street and a smaller hostel on the main road running inland from a roundabout near the ferry piers. Both are good options for budget travellers needing (or wanting) to spend a night in the centre of Thong Sala town.
The guesthouse occupies a three-storey concrete shophouse-style building painted bright blue and yellow – perhaps for a splash of Latin style to go with the Spanish name? Rooms are spacious and clean, with bright abstract art hung on violet walls and decent pink blankets on comfortable beds. The decor combines with a fridge, clean hot-water bathroom and ceiling fan (in addition to air-con) to form a cheerful vibe, offsetting the dark confines resulting from only tiny windows placed near the ceiling. You could go for a slightly more expensive front room for tinted windows and access to a balcony overlooking the bustling street with its many cafes and shops; though keep in mind that these will be noisier. The woman who showed us around was standoffish but did not seem rude or lazy.
Around the corner on Taladmai Road, Su Casa operates a hostel with a clean air-con dorm (mixed gender) relying on a few hot-water bathrooms and sporting orange sheets on thin mattresses along with orange walls and polished concrete floors. Hope you like orange. While the bunks are average, relative to other Ko Pha Ngan hostels, they go for just 500 baht during the Full Moon Party, when nearby Vagabond, for instance, charges 1,000 baht per bunk. Unlike Vagabond, Nomad House, Blessing, Wanderlust, Cats in Space and Slumber Party, Su Casa Hostel has minimal common space and not much of a social scene.
Nearby Boss Hostel has a similar setup, while Treechart Hostel serves up bunks for just 100 baht in a building that reminded us of a warehouse. Across the street from Su Casa Guesthouse, A’s has a few slightly more expensive private rooms for rent above the restaurant. As a last resort, you could head over to the ancient Asia Hotel across Taladmai Road from Old Chinese Street.
